Blogs a good tool for open local government

Cory at Madville Times posted an entry (some may call it a rant) about the use of blogs in creating a more open local government.  Blogs are inexpensive and easy to set up.  So much so they can even be issue driven like newyankton.com.  Newyankton.com was created to discuss the uproar over the separation agreement reached with former city manager Jeff Weldon.  Although it was one side of the issue I read it and gave it consideration in my choice for a new city manager.  Which was Jeff by the way.  It was shut down as soon as enough petitions were gathered to force a recall election.

It is all about information and letting everyone be heard.

Rant? Long-winded, maybe, but rant? That was a pretty tame post compared to what's coming when the Legislature starts mucking about (and I feel a lot of muck coming on).

Everyone, blogorazzi and non-Web-savvy alike, should take note of what you say here, that you actually read the New Yankton blog and considered the points there in your hiring decision. You recognized it was one-sided, but lots of sources are. Rather than shutting your ears to information, you took it in, weighed it with your judgment against all the other information, and made the call. It's good to know some elected officials do listen to all sides. And it's really good to see a brave few elected officials speaking as openly as they can about how they make their decisions. Keep it up, Tim!
