Collegian's First Editorial is Ill-Informed
SDSU's student run newspaper's first editorial of the school year Brunner potential key for campus and community to unite makes several good points but is ill-informed on the relationship between student leadership and city officials.
Several good points were made in the editorial. I'll agree Brookings has a hard time accepting that it's a college town. On the other hand students need to realize that Brookings wants to be more diverse and not just labeled a college town. I also agree that students need to be more involved with "all aspects of life in Brookings". Students alone can elect Ryan to another term if he chooses to run. Registering and voting in city elections will give students a loud voice in all city issues.
The editorial was wrong in stating students have been ignored by the Council. Ryan Brunner has been a key asset in improving the relationship between the city and students with his work as the president of the Student Association. I have had the pleasure of working with the current and past four student leadership teams, all of them active in lobbying for students and university affairs. They all created a relationship with me where I was comfortable bringing issues to them and asking for their input.
Brunners appointment is positive and will help create even a better environment between the campus and the town but the Collegian needs to approach the issue understanding that city and student leadership relationship has been good and is improving.
